Nerds Pay It Forward – Giving Back with Random Acts of Kindness

Coastal Computer - Wednesday, July 20, 2016

Throughout the month of August, members of the Coastal Computer Consulting team will be “paying it forward” and proving that nerds have a heart too!

Inspired by the movie, Pay it Forward, starring Kevin Spacey, and the book of the same name by Catherine Ryan Hyde, Nerds Pay It Forward is part of a number of movements across the country and around the world to give back through simple, kind gestures. These random acts of kindness brighten people’s days and encourage more people to leave a positive impact on each other.

At Coastal Computer Consulting, we’re adding a light-hearted touch by naming our effort Nerds Pay It Forward. After all, helping someone should be an act of joy! Despite the witty name, the goal of our effort is the same as other “pay it forward” movements: to encourage people to give back by giving to someone else in need.

We wanted to learn more about the pay it forward movement, so we did some research, and learned that the idea of “paying it forward” goes back further than even the book or the movie. According to Wikipedia, one of our founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin believed in the principle. It’s a simple concept, and it can leave a positive impact on a lot of people’s lives. In case you haven’t seen the movie, or heard of “paying it forward” before, here’s how it works:

When someone does something for you, or lends you something, typically your first instinct is to “pay it back,” and return the favor to the person who helped. That’s a good thing. Imagine making it even better! Instead of “paying back” the person who helped, you “pay it forward,” and do a good deed, give, or lend something to someone else in need.

As more and more people “pay it forward,” the effect spreads like a ripple, creating a positive impact in a growing number of people’s lives.

During the month of August, we’ll be showing that while we may love technology and consider ourselves “nerds,” we also have a heart and care about giving to our community too! We’ll be traveling around the Golden Isles and Southern Georgia paying for someone’s tank of gas, helping them put groceries in their car, and performing other random acts of kindness to surprise and delight the residents of our community.

Our ultimate goal is to encourage more businesses and residents in the Golden Isles to give back. You can keep track of our efforts on social media with the hashtag “#nerdspayitforward”.
